Speak Easy Door Details
The Womens Temperance Groups in the 1830's began the movement advocating the abstinence of alcohol. In 1869 The National Prohibition Party was formed and by then 13 states had passed prohibition laws. In 1918 the War Time Prohibition Act was passed to save grain for the war effort. A year later the U.S. Congress passed the Volstead Act beginning the enforcement of Prohibition. This law turned the attention of the Mafia and many big time gangsters like Al Capone to Bootlegging. The term "Speak Easy" arose from the bartenders asking their patrons to speak easy (in a low voice) when ordering illegel booze. Many of these clubs and bars became known as "Speakeasy's". These Speakeasy's often had small openings in their door that they could open to see who was outside before opening the door. These openings were referred to as "Speak Easy Doors".
The Speak Easy Doors varied in size from a couple of inches to about 12 inches and opened to the inside. Some had Glass in them and Iron Grills on the outside. The pictures above show a Speak Easy Door closed and latched and another that has been opened.
