What is Custom

I like words.  I love the dictionary, and I stand in awe of the English language.  How a string of words put together can describe a feeling or an emotion.  How changing just one word in a phrase can change the whole meaning of a sentence.  I am amazed how the right words put together can form a vision in your head and even change the entire feeling of a paragraph.  As we have refreshed our website, I have spent a lot of time thinking about the word custom.

Broken down to its root definition, the word “Custom” is simply an adjective meaning “made or done to order for a particular customer.”  That’s not very exciting.  We’re in the “Custom Door” business.  For a person who likes words, that phrase falls a little flat.

What we do is so much more than that!  We have an opportunity to meet you at a very exciting time in your life.  You are probably building a new home, or looking to make a change to your existing home.  When you come to us, you are full of hope and ideas and we are so excited to be able to partner with you to help those hopes and ideas come to life.  Consequently, it is our job to do everything we can to make your dream a reality.

How we do Custom

I can remember one night, my husband J.K., came home from work with a DVD from Blockbuster. (Remember that store?)  Now, being a newlywed, I was excited about the prospect of a mid-week movie night!  I grabbed the DVD and was very surprised to look down and see that he had rented Bring It On.  Consequently, I glanced at him with a look of confusion on my face and he replied, “Oh, I need to do some door research.  I had a customer come in today.  She said there was a very short shot of a front door in the movie, and she really loved the door.  She wanted to know if we could build one like it.”

So, we sat down and watched the movie, pausing at the right spot so he could make some notes and do a short sketch.  What resulted from that impromptu movie night, is one of my favorite doors.

Custom is so much more than made or done to order for a particular customer.  For us, custom means getting to know you, finding out what your vision is for your door, going out of our way to make that vision a reality, and creating something pretty spectacular in the process.

From a person who likes words, there are many words that I feel better describe what we do.  Pretty, flowery words like tailor-made, handcrafted, and special.  But since you don’t see a lot of keyword searches for “tailor-made doors”, I’ll stick with custom, and dream all the pretty words in my head for now.
